About Red Zebra Broadcasting

Red Zebra Broadcasting’s original three Washington DC stations went on the air in July 2006 as a sports radio simulcast. Since then the company has added stations in DC and expanded into Richmond.

Red Zebra Broadcasting operates ESPN 980. ESPN 980 is the Flagship radio station for Washington Redskins play-by-play with Larry Michael, Rick "Doc" Walker and Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen and Chris Cooley. WTEM, WWXX and WWXT make up ESPN 980.  The Washington Redskins broadcasts are heard on over 30 affiliated radio stations throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.  Our local weekday programming includes some of the best on air talent in the country; Tony Kornheiser, Steve Czaban, Kevin Sheehan, Thom Loverro, Andy Pollin, Doc Walker, Brian Mitchel and Chris Cooley.  

ESPN 980 is also the exclusive home of the Play-by-Play broadcasts for Maryland Terrapins Basketball and Football, Georgetown Hoyas Basketball, University of Virginia Football and Basketball, MLB and the World Series.  It's the home for the NBA and NBA Finals and the NFL. ESPN 980 is also the home of the Baltimore Orioles in Washington DC.  ESPN 950 is the home of the Washington Nationals in Richmond, as well as the Richmond Spiders football and basketball, Old Dominion University football and basketball and the PGA Majors.

POSITION SUMMARY

The company is looking for an innovative and analytical Director of Programming to join their dynamic team.    

 

DUTIES AND PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Required Skills

 

·       Direct and monitor stations programming and activities in conformance with FCC rules and regulations, company policy and applicable federal, state and local laws.

·       Prepare and manage to budget for Programming Department.

·       Monitor and evaluate programming selected for the station.

·       Plan, schedule and oversee all on-air programming and imaging production.

·       Work with leadership team in support of national, local and corporate business objectives including increasing local market share and listeners, ratings, revenue and cost control.

·       Coordinate with programming, marketing and sales staff to plan and execute promotions and image campaigns.

·       Evaluate programming available from distributors, syndicators, and independent producers to recommend acquisitions for broadcast.

·       Implementing content and development of station’s website, social media activities, and online presence to deepen listener relationships (eg Facebook, Twitter, contests, etc)

·       Assume full responsibility of station(s) Programming Department

·       Develop and coach on-air staff.

·       Audition and hire on-air talent.

·       Schedule staff for on-air shifts, remotes, appearances, and board operation.

·       Ensure EEO Policy is followed.

·       Additional responsibilities as needed.

Required Experience

 

·       College degree preferred.

·       Ten years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·       Knowledge of all FCC rules and regulations.

·       Advanced knowledge of Nielsen software and PPM methodology.

·       High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office.

·       Valid driver’s license.

·       Ability to be flexible and work under short deadlines.

·       Ability to perform as On-Air Announcer on a Sports formatted station.

Accounting Intern

 


Red Zebra Broadcasting, LLC , (a/k/a ESPN980) is a local DC sports marketing company and is searching for a student Intern currently enrolled at a local college and pursuing a degree and career in Accounting or Finance. This is a temporary, part time, nonpaying position and suited for an individual who wants to learn accounting basics in a professional fast paced work environment.  


This intern assignment may qualify for college credit towards the completion of the individual’s degree depending on the College/University degree requirements. The intern will work directly with the Corporate Controller, Finance staff and Chief Financial Officer.

Sports Radio Sales Account Executive

The Sports Account Executive position is an outside sales position based out of the broadcast facility in Rockville, Maryland.  Account Executives are experienced media sales professionals able to generate revenue from local and regional advertisers and advertising agencies.  The ideal candidate has a proven track record in advertising sales with an understanding of the Sports Talk format and personality driven content.  Our account executives sell advertising across popular sports talk shows like Mike & Mike in the Morning, Tony Kornheiser, the Sports Fix, Inside the Locker Room, and the Sports Reporters as well as a wide array of play-by-play sporting events including Redskins Football, Orioles Baseball, University of Maryland Football and Basketball, NFL Playoffs, Super Bowl, and Georgetown University Basketball.  We are looking for a self-starter with a consultative sales approach who is pro-active in generating new business and increasing advertising from existing advertisers.

5.    Successfully close accounts in excess of $50,000 annually and manage a business exceeding $1,000,000 in yearly revenue.

Requirements:

1.    Minimum of 2 to 3 years advertising sales experience with proven success.
2.    Strong sales and customer service skills.
3.    Superior phone, in-person, and written communication abilities.
4.    Strong understanding of marketing dynamics including demographic and psychographic targeting and branding positions.
5.    Results oriented, accountable, strong work ethic, proven negotiation skills.
6.    Outstanding computer skills including solid knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
7.    4-year college degree, preferably Marketing and Advertising.

Street Team Position


ESPN980 Street Team Member

ESPN 980 is in search of a few good all stars to join our street team! As an ESPN 980 street team member, you will serve as a brand ambassador and gain a first-hand perspective into the many aspects of the sports radio, marketing and advertising industries! This part-time position is perfect for those looking for experience in promotions & live events.
 
Responsibilities include:

Setting up event and staging elements, attending promotions which include Redskins Games, Remote Broadcasts, station events, and sales appearances.
Supporting programming staff during live broadcasts, listener interaction at all events.
 

Requirements:

Must be dedicated, hard-working, self motivated and open to learning new skills through hands-on experience.
Must apply creativity and initiative to all projects.
Clear verbal skills and an outgoing, adaptive personality are essential.
Knowledge of media, sports and entertainment industries is preferred.
Must have access to reliable transportation, a clean driving record, and a comfort level driving station vehicles, full-size SUV’s.   
Be able to lift at least fifty pounds and be able to learn how to set up station display materials.  
Be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Ability to work a minimum of ten to twelve hours a week during football season.  
Be able to work well in a team environment.

Client Services & Marketing Internship

Principal Job Functions:
The purpose of this internship is to give students an opportunity to learn and provide support in the day to day operations of the Marketing & Client Services department. Responsibilities may include designing and creating new sales materials, planning and assisting in the execution of station promotional events, supporting the sales and marketing teams, client and market research, and working at station remote broadcasts including home game dates. Interns may also work with clients on day to day projects involving game day marketing campaigns and on-air advertising.

Skills and Abilities Required:
Applicants must be dedicated, hard-working, self motivated and open to learning new skills through hands-on experience. Must apply creativity and initiative to all projects. Clear verbal, written and typing/computer skills are essential. Knowledge of media, sports and entertainment industries is preferred. Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word programs are used daily.

Requirements and Reporting Structure:
This is an unpaid internship and students must earn college credit. Students must be entering at least their junior year in college to be considered. The main office location of Red Zebra Broadcasting is in Rockville, MD and applicants must be able to provide their own transportation to the station as well as possible events at FedEx Field in Landover, MD or Redskins Park in Ashburn, VA.
